The city was named in the honor of General George Henry Thomas. General Philip Sheridan personally selected the 11 acres of the city land predicting it to become the "West Point of the West." This post was named Fort Thomas. The 6th Infantry Regiment of United States established their camp in Fort Thomas, and remained until June 1898.
